The prolific Woody Allen directs Scarlett Johansson and Rebecca Hall as New York girlfriends, Vicky and Cristina, who take a summer holiday in Barcelona on the eve of Vicky's wedding to business executive Doug (Chris Messina).

Javier Bardem stars as a flamboyant local artist, Juan Antonio who the girls meet at a bistro one night. He invites them on a weekend of hedonistic fun a short flight away. Vicky's reserve is overcome by Cristina's daring and a fabulous weekend is had.

Penelope Cruz stars as Juan Antonio's ex-wife, Maria Elena, with whom he has a tempestuous relationship. When Maria Elena returns under dramatic circumstances, something changes for them all and the situation becomes very complicated.
