During the depression a poor boy is left to fend for himself after his mother is hospitalised and his dad leaves home. Left alone in a sleazy hotel, he gets to know the tenants and employees, including an epileptic young girl and a wealthy alcoholic, while a well-meaning teacher keeps an eye on him.
