This multi-layered exploration of memory, love and reconciliation is set in 1950 during the national crisis which erupted following Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor, on an island in the Pacific Northwest and is directed by Oscar nominee Scott Hicks (Shine).

A flickering lantern signals distress from a crippled fishing boat, while elsewhere a freighter lurches blindly through the chalky mist. By morning, sea and sky are clear, but the tranquil village of fishermen and berry farmers will forever be changed. One man has lost his life and another, a childhood friend, has been charged with taking it. An investigation is launched. The trial begins.

The acting ensemble is headed by Ethan Hawke (Before the Devil Knows You're Dead) as reporter Ishmael Chambers and Youki Kudoh (Memoirs of a Geisha) as the wife of the accused and Ishmael's childhood friend. Rick Yune (The Fast and the Furious) debuts as the Japanese-American fisherman on trial for his life.

Support comes from Max von Sydow (Minority Report), James Cromwell (W.), James Rebhorn (Up Close & Personal) and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor). Sam Shepard (Crimes of the Heart) also stars as a crusading newspaperman, who embodies the best intentions of the Anglo community.
