Oscar winner Robert Redford directs Matt Damon and Will Smith in the story of Rannulph Junah (Damon), the best golfer in Savannah. WWI begins and Junnah goes to Europe to fight. The only survivor of a dangerous mission, he doesn't return to Savannah for 15 years.
In 1930 he returns to find that his girlfriend Adele's father has committed suicide and there are mounting debts. Adele vows to bring to Savannah the greatest match ever played and is able to round up the two best golfers of their time, Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen.
Rannulph Junah is called upon. He’s now an alcoholic and has lost his swing; but a mystic caddy, Bagger Vance (Smith), appears and teaches him the secret of the authentic golf stroke.
The story is narrated by Junah's number one fan, Hardy Greaves, voiced by Jack Lemmon, in his final film. When Lemmon tees up at the beginning of the movie, he says, "It's magic time." That is the phrase Lemmon would say before every take in every movie he ever did.
Trivia:
"Bagger Vance" and "R. Junuh" are representations of Bhagavan (Krishna) and Arjuna, from the Hindu text "The Bhagavad Gita". The lessons learned by Rannulph are loosely based on those Krishna teaches to Arjuna while masquerading as his lowly chariot driver; Matt Damon did not have any previous experience playing golf.
