In the heart of Kentucky's thoroughbred country, three friends (Jeff Bridges, Nick Nolte and Sharon Stone) must face the terrible consequences of a crime of passion and greed they have kept secret for 20 years.

The story, based on a Sam Shepard play, goes between modern day, when Lyle Carter (Bridges) is a millionaire closing a huge deal on a Triple-Crown winning horse and Vincent Webb (Nolte) is a man tortured by his past, and the 1970s, when the two friends were breaking into the horse racing business.
