Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are heavy metal fanatics Wayne and Garth, hosts of "Wayne's World", a public cable network TV show in Wayne's basement, which becomes extremely popular catching the attention of Rob Lowe's handsome TV network executive.

Wayne and Garth find themselves moving up bit time and Wayne falls for a bass guitarist (Tia Carrere) and uses his and Garth's video contacts to help her career along.

Directed by Penelope Spheeris, who also helmed the documentary We Sold Our Souls for Rock'n'Roll and who declined the offer to direct This Is Spinal Tap (1984), because she thought you couldn't make fun of Heavy Metal music.

Trivia: the movie was shot in 34 days and the "Stairway to Heaven" guitar riff was changed for the international, cable and videotape releases to a generic riff because of disputes in obtaining rights to the first five notes of the song, which appear only in the US theatrical release; in the early '70s, some British music shops banned or fined patrons for playing the song because it was played so often; pictures of Wayne and Garth in Garth's bedroom are from earlier "Saturday Night Live" sketches; while filming the Bohemian Rhapsody sequence, both Mike Myers and Dana Carvey developed severe pain in their necks from all the head banging.
