In this bit of slapstick directed by Steven Spielberg, mass hysteria grips California in the wake of the bombing of Pearl Harbor as an assorted group of defenders attempt to make the coast defensible against an imagined Japanese invasion.

Panic goes through the roof as the sundry lunatics, including a deranged General obsessed with Dumbo the Elephant, join the hunt for the elusive submarine.

The cast going crazy includes Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, John Candy, Mickey Rourke and Ned Beatty.

Trivia:
The gas station where Captain Wild Bill Kelso (John Belushi) lands to refuel was the same one used in Steven Spielberg's Duel. Lucille Benson, the gas station owner, also appeared in Duel as the Snakerama owner at the same station; Reese and Foley are the names used by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale for any police officers or government agents in films they have written; John Belushi failed to show up on a couple of occasions because his nightlife made him too tired to work.
