Hugo Weaving and Josephine Byrnes star as Jonathan and Beth Wheats, an upper middle class British couple who seem to have everything in their favour. Jonathan is a successful businessman with a passion for toy soldiers and building model battlefields out of plaster and gauze in a shed behind their home, and Beth is a painter and art teacher who dreams of being a successful artist.

On their way home from the theatre one night, they discover their home has been broken into and kill a burglar with an antique crossbow. The burglar turns out to be an old friend of the family. The police investigate and Jonathan and Beth are absolved of any blame in the burglar's death, but an old and valuable set of silverware is discovered to be missing.

The Wheats file an insurance claim for the missing silver. Enter Roland Copping (a very menacing Phil Collins as you've never seen him), insurance investigator, who arrives to investigate their claim. On the surface, he appears affable, polite and friendly. But Roland Copping is no average investigator.

Every crucial decision he makes is based on a throw of a pair of yellow dice he carries with him at all times, a habit he's had since they were given to him on his eighth birthday. He's also a wild and cruel prankster and a very shrewd investigator.
